Reflexology and Coping with Stress

Stress has got to be the most common disease today, since all of us suffer from the negative effects of too much of it at some point in our lifetime.

While some stress is good for you, for example if you need to be alert and 'on it' when making an important speech in front of a big audience, but too much ongoing stress and your body reacts by shutting down, affecting concentration, creating negative emotional reactions and causing lethargy and disruption to body systems.  Do you recognise the signs - colds, headaches, anger, anxiety, muscle tension, aches and pains, inability to cope, insomnia, tummy trouble, skin breakouts, allergic reactions, indigestion, shortness of breath, overeating, high blood pressure?... the list goes on.

Stress cannot be cured, but it can be managed effectively so as not to cause you long term harm.  Way back through the centuries, before the medical profession advanced, it was standard practice to recuperate from the stresses of life by resting frequently, meditate, take exercise and get away from daily routines by visiting the countryside or the seaside when people became ill. 

Arguably we are exposed to ever more stress triggers which makes it harder to manage.  However, why is it that we have a tendency to ignore the messages our body gives us to slow down and take five for the sake of our health, until we are far down the line or even too late?

The immune system is directly affected by the stress hormone Cortisol.  Cortisol, a steroid, is produced by the adrenal glands and it increases our fuel supplies which is needed to respond to stress.  However, if levels remain high for a long time then inflammation occurs and the immune system becomes weakened, leading to a risk of infection and sickness.



Reflexology is widely known to promote relaxation and calm.  It triggers the parasympathetic nervous system in reaction to the stress and thus brings the body back into balance.

Reflexology does not interfere with orthodox medicine.  A GP will treat specific ailments resulting from stress on a short term basis, but do not deal with what's causing the stress in the first place, crucially avoiding the overall well being of the patient.   My clients who have regular Reflexology treatments come for the personal interaction, the feeling of control and positivity, comfort and well being, for some valuable time out and are appreciative that the side effects of treatment allows them to cope better with life and stress.
