RLD is a specific way of performing Reflexology, using specialist moves that target the lymphatic system in particular. Unlike our cardiovascular system, our lymphatics relies solely on bodily movement for the fluid to move. It plays a key role in our body's immune system, so targeting the key areas of the feet corresponding to the lymphatics, while also focusing on the area of concern, is a very effective way of stimulating the body's own response to clear out toxins and blockages.
Sam brings this very special unique method from the UK, exclusively to Sydney.
As with MLD (Manual Lymph Drainage), RLD can be used to treat other conditions aside from Secondary Lymphoedema. The key difference between MLD and RLD is that instead of a massage or remedial therapist massaging the area of the body affected by fluid and swelling which can be sore and painful, especially after surgery, Reflexology Lymph Drainage is discreet and focuses solely on the feet or hands by encouraging the flow of fluid through the manipulation of lymphatic reflex points.
Prior to each treatment, the affected, swollen limb of the client will be measured and volume of fluid calculated and written down. The RLD treatment takes place and then a final measurement taken in order to track the reduction of swelling and lymph to the affected area. The resulting level of reduction is unique to each individual and dependent on the severity of the condition. In my experience, swelling and pain has been reduced after a single session with longer term benefits experienced within 4-5 treatments. As Lymphoedema is an incurable condition, RLD is a particularly effective long term tool for the management of localisted pain and swelling.
Watch this video about how non-evasive and beneficial Reflexology Lymph Drainage is to those with Secondary Lymphoedema.
Impressively, other conditions that may benefit from RLD treatments are:
- Chronic fatigue
- IBS and Crohns
- Skin conditions and allergies
- Menstrual conditions
RLD - Development
Reflexology Lymph Drainage is a relatively new, advanced and pioneering technique developed by Sally Kay BSc(Hons). A UK based Reflexologist that started work in this area of therapy having worked in Cancer Care. Through her study and treatment of breast cancer patients with secondary lymphoedema, positive effects were found after just the first RLD treatment, with a reduction in fluid retention and swelling in and around the arms. Sally continues her work and exploration in this technique and teaches fellow Reflexologists across the world.
