Reflexology Lymph Drainage

RLD is a specific way of performing Reflexology, using specialist moves that target the lymphatic system in particular.  Unlike our cardiovascular system, our lymphatics rely solely on bodily movement for the fluid to move. It plays a key role in our body's immune system, so targeting the key areas of the feet corresponding to the lymphatics, while also focusing on the area of concern, is a very effective way of stimulating the body's own response to reduce swelling, clear out toxins and blockages and boost our ability to fight infection.

Watch this video below about how non evasive and beneficial Reflexology Lymph Drainage is to those with Secondary Lymphoedema.

Sam exclusively brings this specialist RLD Reflexology treatment to Sydney, Australia.

As with MLD (Manual Lymph Drainage), RLD can be used to treat other conditions aside from Secondary Lymphoedema.  The key difference between MLD and RLD is that instead of a massage or remedial therapist massaging the area of the body affected by fluid and swelling which can be sore and painful, especially after surgery, Reflexology Lymph Drainage is discreet and focuses solely on the feet or hands by encouraging the flow of fluid through the manipulation of lymphatic reflex points.

What happens during an RLD treatment on a swollen limb?

Prior to a RLD treatment, where possible we begin by taking a few measurements of the affected, swollen limb with a tape measure and record the volume of fluid.  The RLD treatment then takes place on the feet (or hands) and the limb is re-measured.  This way, we can see and accurately track the difference in fluid volume. This is particularly useful to assess the progression of and improvement in a clients condition over time.

Because of the health assessment and measurement recording, treatments take around 90 minutes.

After just one treatment, clients experience an immediate release of tension and heaviness and in the area of Edema and you can often see the difference in swelling.

However, a series of 4-5 RLD sesssions, will record the greatest difference and improvement in feeling and condition of the affected area.  Clients report an overwhelming feeling of well being and the treatments will start to have a longer lasting effect over time.

My clients use RLD as an effective tool, often alongside compression garments and massage. They go on to have regular, monthly RLD treatments as part of an ongoing management of the condition.

Other conditions that can benefit from RLD treatments are:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Oedema
  • Lupus
  • Fibromyalgia
  • MS
  • Arthritis
  • IBS and Crohns
  • Skin conditions and allergies
  • Menstrual conditions
  • Auto immune conditions and those prone to frequent infection

In fact any condition that involves an inflammation of body tissue.

RLD - Development

Reflexology Lymph Drainage is a relatively new, advanced and pioneering technique developed by Sally Kay BSc(Hons). A UK based Reflexologist that started work in this area of therapy having worked in Cancer Care alongside nurses in the MLD clinic at Cardiff University Hospital.  Through her study, development and treatment of breast cancer patients with secondary lymphoedema, positive effects were found after just the first RLD foot treatment, with a reduction in fluid retention and swelling in and around the arms.  Sally continues her hard work, exploration and promotion in this technique and now teaches fellow Reflexologists across the world.

With a growing number of Reflexologists now trained in this RLD therapy and gaining hands-on experience with not just the effective treatment of secondary Lymphoedema but also other inflammatory and fluid retention related conditions, the professional Reflexology community is rapidly growing in skill set and confidence, and proudly taking an active part in the improved well being of many people with Oedema around the world.
